John Beech

A point I want to make with regard to John Beech (and this is something about which I have not yet written)—the way genres shape subjectivities. If you look at one of John’s reports…I wrote in my dissertation about the tone of the report. The genre constructs John as a knowledgeable insider, authoritative is the word, really. This is the kind of person the genre allows him to be. But his critical analysis essay—doesn’t allow the same thing. He may be trying, but it doesn’t really. So, there is a connection between Bawarshi’s concept of alpha genre identity and John’s report writing. I need to explore this a bit more…
