Although hardly a complete or systematic data set, the school papers and memories of school writing these writers shared offer a glimpse into their developmental processes from the earliest stages of literacy through college or graduate school. (138)

Nonetheless, I present three of the writers' accounts of writ ing experiences, from earliest memories to the completion of formal edu cation, and a brief analysis of the data from multiple developmental per spectives: syntactic development, cognitive development, and movement toward legitimate participation in a given discourse community. A sense of the journey toward expert writing performance will be evident. (140)
