Theme: The Profession

In this context, we are pleased to announce the fourth special issue, to be published in 2013, focused on The Profession.

I especially welcome two kinds of responses to this CFP.

OPTION 1: The first is a proposal of 250 words for a full-length manuscript of addressing:

• The relationship between job descriptions and qualifications for positions
• The transition from graduate school into the academic life
• Professionalization and socialization into the field/discipline
• Institutional lives of faculty, including classroom lives
• Positions of privilege in the field and their costs and benefits
• Different kinds of responsibilities at different kinds of institutions
• Tenure and promotion policies and practices
• The nature and practices of external review for tenure and/or promotion
• The nature of programmatic external review
• The nature of tenure and promotion inside institutions
• Public policy (federal, state, district) and its impact on the profession and/or faculty lives
• “Outsourcing” of writing curricula, including classes, writing center activity and the like
• Critiques of outsourcing
• Writing “elsewhere,” including WAC, CAC, and WID
• Assessment and accountability
• Working conditions of various kinds of faculty
• The role of contingent faculty, including graduate students
• The role of imperatives (e.g. moral and intellectual) in changing the labor landscape
• New kinds of positions in the field
• The relationships between/among diversity, faculty, and institutional types
• Structures of pay and reward
• Ehics in the profession at large and/or any aspect of it

This list, however, is not meant to be prescriptive. I welcome queries, ideas, and proposals; please be sure to limit proposals to 250 words each.

OPTION 2: The second response I welcome is a completed vignette or “small scope narrative” of the lived experience of teaching writing and/or being a member of the profession (limited to 1000 words). This must be complete at the time of submission, and should be appropriately labeled.

This is a possible venue for my article on the rebellious nature of the field...
