Notes on: “A Proposed Course in Freshman English – Minority Report” (Dec 15, 1944)

Timeline of Events

• ·      A proposal for a new course in Freshman English is made, coming from Sub-Committee One of the Policies Committee (set up by Dean Blewett in the spring of 1944 to study and recommend to the Policies Committee educational objectives for the Liberal Arts College)
• ·      Dr. Stowe, member of the Sub-Committee and professor in the school of Education (Chairman as of 1945) proposes that a semester course in “oral expression” and a semester course in “writing” be organized and required of freshman.
• ·      Stowe’s proposal is shot down. Instead, the sub-committee recommends to the Policies Committee a “year course in written and oral English be organized and required.”
• ·      The Policies Committee took the proposal to the English Department for discussion
• ·      The English Department, at a dept meeting, votes unanimously in favour of such a course.
• ·      A committee of four from English is appointed to draft an outline of “A Freshman English Course”—committee members: Hennessey (Chair), Lucinda Smith, Gwynne Daggett, Sylvester Bingham.
• ·      Committee presents a report to English Department, which is accepted and express themselves in favor of “A proposed course in freshman English to be required of all university freshman”
