• Sept. 11, 1930: Born, Fall River, MA (son of Wilfred Graves, a school principal, and Marion Hiller, a nurse)
• 1952: Bachelor's in English from Bates College
• 1952-56: U.S. Coast Guard
• 1956: Began teaching at the East Fairhaven Elementary School
• 1958: became principal
• 1959: obtained his master's in education from Bridgewater State College
• ?-?: new career in educational ministry at the Hamburg Presbyterian Church in New York
• 1973: the University at Buffalo awarded him his doctorate in education; dissertation: Children's Writing: Research Directions and Hypotheses Based Upon an Examination of the Writing Processes of Seven-Year-Old Children (according to this article, his dissertation won the Promising Researcher award from NCTE); he accepts position at UNH (???) 
• 1975: "An Examination of the Writing Processes of Seven-Year-Old Children" (RTE)
• 1976: founded the Writing Process Laboratory at UNH 
• 1976: A Survey of Current Instructional Practices in and Approaches to the Teaching of Reading/Language Arts in New Hampshire. (NH State Department of Education) 
• 1978: Balance the Basics: Let Them Write (Ford Foundation report) 
• 1978-1981: NIE funded research which culminates in A Case Study Observing the Development of Primary Children's Composing, Spelling, and Motor Behaviors During the Writing Process (Writing Process Laboratory) $230,000
